Sonia Gulati's profile

Health Care and Life Sciences Investors Optimistic

A venture capitalist with a PhD in biochemistry, Sonia Gulati serves as executive in residence at Kairos Ventures in New York City. In line with her educational background, the majority of Sonia Gulati's investment activities over the years have focused on the life sciences industry.

According to a recently published KPMG survey, many life sciences investors are feeling optimistic about the investment outlook in 2020. Despite some concerns that the sector was in a “bubble” in 2019, the year finished out strong after seeing a large amount of deal activity. Investment professionals focused on the areas of health care and the life sciences expect the deal volume to grow across most sectors in 2020.

The sector that investors are most optimistic about is health IT, which is receiving a boost as companies seek better ways to collect, manage, and utilize health care data. Other areas drawing major investor interest include pharma/biotech, behavioral health, and home/hospice care.

It should be noted that while most are optimistic, some investors are looking ahead to the coming months with caution. This is due mostly to the upcoming 2020 election, which many investors surveyed by KPMG believe could negatively impact health care and life sciences investments.
