The Anti-Education Era written by James Paul Gee.
Considering all the severe global issues we humans are facing today, how is it that we do nothing? How is it that we pass yet another day doing what our daily routine demands? How is it that we are not bothered let alone be concerned? Are we not moved because we are stupid enough to ignore the evidences? Or are we being conditioned to ignore evidences and taught to become stupid? Many a times when we think about the global issues, and what can be done about them? We often respond by saying “what can I, a single person, do? How are my actions going to make an impact? Am I not just another brick in the wall”?
I believe this is where our education system comes in to play a role. It is the responsibility of this system to ensure that each one of us is equipped to combat the innate limitations we have as human beings. James Paul Gee author of The Anti-Education Era suggests educators must “engage children and help parents engage their children in extended conversations about the world”. Such instructions should include powerful images and goal-based actions. In addition, Gee says every one of us can act smart if we are made to feel important and that we can be a part of the big Mind.
He goes on to explain “A Mind is a synchronized, well-choreographed integration of smart tools and individual minds to form a collective intelligence that can learn and adapt.” In explaining smart tools Gee refers to digital tools that will not merely serve us but will enable us to be “more”. Thus, a holistic learning and using digital tools to contribute to our growth, we can make a better and smarter future possible.
