Butunay Hagverdiyev's profile

la biennale di venezia 2013 "Unliteral latters"

Unliteral latters.

In this work, Butunay is analyzing the tendency in contemporary art to convert visual art to conceptual, textual , literal comparing to many centurial traditions of visual references . Butunay sees a need of underlining visual language value in contemporary art as a great cultural tool. The problem Butunay unfolds is developing of pure visual art in the way of creating dialog with spectator that is based on reaction to shape, color and dynamic of composition without explaining a narrative textual direction .

Working in painting technique ,Butunay changes a rectangular form of a painting surface to the  established shapes of ornamental Turkic latter that is historically used for explaining text and ornamentation In calligraphy . He shows the latter not as the symbol with a special meaning or a sound but as a form –  that has it’s own composition, proportions, dynamic that has been a decarative element of ethnic ornaments but as a latter which is a word itself in different language , language of visual culture.

Lessening established purpose of latter – to make words. Instead of using words to communicate with a viewer Hagverdiyev Butunay chooses to show abstract image “written” in latters .
