In hindsight, we should have reserved a camp site prior to our road trip up from LA. When we arrived at Wawona campgrounds, the camp ranger said that there was only one spot left and it was ours if we wanted it. Of course we said yes. However the next day posed yet another challenge for us, we had to go deeper into the park to find a first come first serve camp site for the night. This particular weekend at the end of September was the busiest they had ever seen it and it didn't help they were projecting a rather large snow storm. We settled in to Tamarack Flat campground not far outside the valley. The temperature got as low as 20 degrees that night, thankfully we packed our thermals and some whiskey.
