It's time for the first celebration of the new year! Carnival, also known as Mardi Gras, is the time of colours, playfulness and rumble as we put on costumes and masks to scare the winter away and dance with spring. We have decided to create an art challenge to help us pass the time until Fat Tuesday and get us into the festive mood via creativity.

day 1: Mask, Costume

Ahh sweet were the times of carnival celebrations back when I was a kid. For a day, we, the kids, went all funny looking and a bit wild while the grown-ups encouraged us to become any character of our imagination. My grandma, who worked as a sewing lady, used to make me the best costumes in the whoooole world. Little me was always so proud of her creations - she appointed me as her main advisor as her hands of gold patiently took care of each stitch she sewed.

During Carnival days in Croatia we'd go trick or treating around our neighborhoods returning home with bags full of goodies - everything from home-baked doughnuts (Krafne), loads of sweet sweet candy, some coins (to buy more candy) and raw eggs for some reason that still puzzles my mind. It was a feast to say the least

Though I haven't been a part of carnival parade for a while now, I still get that fuzzy feeling in my stomach when I remember it - the joy of hundreds of kids gathering on the main square displaying their costumes, fun fun times. This one is kind of a rip off, of a client piece that never really got used, interesting to see how my technique and style evolved.
