The Challenge
I was tasked with designing an application for children (1-5) to listen to an audio-book recorded by their parents. The application would have daytime mode, where the child/parent selects a book and listens to it, and a nighttime mode, where the child/parent creates a playlist of audio-books that play in the selected order.
My biggest challenge was to make it intuitive and child-friendly, while also making it easy for the parents to record the books.
The Solution
I made the design very simple and spacious so that the child doesn't get distracted by the design. I created several layout and style versions until the client and I agreed on the best. Some kids know how to read so I put the names of the books in the list. I used emotive icons and decorations to make the child feel safe and better understand the actions (play, pause, stop). The nighttime mode has a dark theme so it doesn't light up the child's bedroom.
