2019 Arch Out HOME Competition
BLANK CANVAS: CHICAGO
The city of Chicago faces a massive population increase, projected to double in size over the next several decades.The city must solve an increasingly prevalent challenge: creating spaces catering to it’s vastly diverse and ever-changing residents. The coming years may bring modern nomads, a growing student population, or environmental refugees fleeing from rising coastlines or critical drought. Homes need to adapt to support this new community and their eclectic needs.
This project proposes space that leaves the configuration of each dwelling up to the inhabitants through extendable walls running along an underlying track system.This entirely modular and adaptable system provides a blueprint for the necessary means to meet any individual’s potential accessibility, privacy, and temporary or permanent settlement needs. Privacy is maintained using locking mechanisms nested in adjoining end walls, securing any space via embedded micro-controllers opened remotely utilizing NFC.
Each module is equipped with environmentally performant innovations to assure total sustainable living. Energy captured by photovoltaic windows is stored in a centralized set of batteries powering wireless power transmitting systems, low power bioluminescent lighting, and
radiant floor heating. This space not only fully supports this new community, but fully supports itself.
