Tom Hück's 2019 Woodcut Bootcamp

Tom Hück's Woodcut Bootcamp 2019

For 10 days, during the summer of 2019, I attended Tom Hück’s Woodcut Bootcamp in St. Louis. This quickly rose to a top 10 experience in my life. Actually, probably top 5. I’ll never forget it, nor will I forget the dozen or so new friends I made while working 10-14 hours a day drawing, carving, printing and drinking (big shout-out to the friendly owners and staff of the ridiculously conveniently located Bootleggin’ BBQ bar next door – great beer and food!).

If you’re not familiar with Hück’s work, visit evilprints.com
Obviously the website does not even come close to doing his work justice. But it’s great to browse nonetheless.

If you’re an artist looking for an amazing adventure and a unique challenge, I implore you to attend Hück’s Bootcamp.

Blank canvas. This was my workspace for the next 9 days.

Pencils.

Inking begins. Two days of Sharpie high.

Tom lecturing. He invited us to his back room which was typically off limits.
He was currently carving Electric Baloneyland. Amazing stuff.

Tom assisting (correcting!) my work.

Sharpie complete. Pencils erased.

Added overall red color to easier view what was carved and what was not.

Warmed up carving the large areas first.

Nachos!

Field trip! Headed over to the St. Louis Art Museum for a private viewing of original Albrecht Dürer prints as well as prints from Max Beckmann, José Guadalupe Posada and Edvard Munch, to name a few.

Carving complete.

Test print on newsprint.
