Shirley 4 President! was inspired by Shirley Anita St Hill Chisholm. Mrs Chisholm was a politician, an educator and an activist. She was the first Black woman in America elected to the United States Congress in 1968. In 1972, Congresswoman Chisholm decided to run for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States.
