CMEA Offers Mentorship for New Music Teachers

A musical theater director with decades of experience, Anthony (Tony) Atienza has worked for institutions such as the San Diego Junior Theatre, Southwestern College, San Diego State University, and Lakeside Middle School. Tony Atienza also served as president of the California Music Educators Association (CMEA).

Created to support those working in music education in California, CMEA provides a variety of professional-development opportunities. The association has offered its Mentorship Program since 2015 to support beginning music educators and ensure that students receive the highest caliber music education.

Through the Mentorship Program, qualified CMEA mentors offer coaching and guidance to first- or second-year music teachers working in public or private schools, colleges, and universities statewide. The mentor-mentee relationship provides the opportunity for new teachers to learn additional skills and tricks from veteran teachers and gain confidence in their profession.
