The view above is beautiful.

Sometimes, though, the walk encompasses looking

Down.

The forest floor - a whole other world.
The rain to the wind said,
'You push and I'll pelt.'

They so smote the garden bed
That the flowers actually knelt,

And lay lodged--
though not dead.

I know how the flowers felt.

Robert Frost
Went looking for faith on the forest floor ...

Neil Young
A forest is a living thing like a human body…

each part dependent on all the other parts.

Louis L’Amour
I will become the forest and not be found ...
They write books on forest bathing, you know?

I never knew spending a day in the forest communing with nature needed a book of instructions.
The Universe -

on the forest floor
“Merlin Speaks:
Ô mighty trees of Avalon
release sap and seeds
into hearts and minds

So Arthur’s dream
can reveal echoes
of futures past

So Camelot’s glory
is forever ingrained
in the rich forests
and mountains’ mysterious valleys
where a once and future King
lowered his sword
and lay in the arms
of his sweet Lady of Forests and Lakes”

Ramon Ravenswood, Icons Speak
The aspens and pines whisper together,

day and night

of rain and drought and

human hands ...
“A forest doesn’t weep over one tree.”

Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn
Feels like home ...

the silence and solitude are delicious.
There are more life forms in a handful of forest soil than there are people on the planet.

Peter Wohlleben
O horizons:

are soil layers with a high percentage of organic matter.

Typically within a woodland area there are three distinct organic layers:

one of leaves, pine needles and twigs (Oi);

underlain by a partially decomposed layer (Oe);

and then a very dark layer of well decomposed humus (Oa).
... now you would never know
There was once a road through the woods
Before they planted the trees.

It is underneath the coppice and heath,
And the thin anemones.

Only the keeper sees
That, where the ring-dove broods,
And the badgers roll at ease,
There was once a road through the woods.

Rudyard Kipling
The forest floor is strewn with the detritus of dead epochs.
Think a whole different world with its own time zone, climate and ecosystem ...
The forest floor, also called

detritus,

duff,

O horizon,

is one of the most distinctive features of a forest ecosystem.
