The Portrayal of Public Relations Practitioners: A Content Analysis of Television and Film

Abstract

This study was conducted using content analysis of four films and two televisionshows. It examined the portrayals of public relations practitioners of the above sample tolook for positive or negative portrayals. It also examined the functions of event planner orplanning and management, among the portrayals. The results show that a positiveportrayal of public relations practitioners is twice that of the negative portrayals, with themanagement function displayed twice as often as the event planner or planning function.Although these results are significant, it also found an unexpectedly high neutralportrayal, exceeding the combined number of positive and negative portrayals.Suggestions for future follow-up research in this area are presented.

"Perception Management" in the Field of Public Relations

Abstract

“Perception management” is a term coined by the Department of Defense, and in
recent years has become a term used by public relations practitioners in the civilian
world.

The research done was with the goal of finding out what civilian public relations
practitioners think the term “perception management” means.

A survey was sent out to public relations practitioners in the South. Although
there was a low response rate to the survey, there were several different variations on
what the term “perception management” meant to those who responded.

The conclusion of this research was that there is clearly no one definition of
perception management. It is still a working term that has no one, clear-cut meaning.
Perception management as a term is new to the world of public relations outside of the
military context and has not been fixed as one complete service or term to be used by
public relations practitioners.
