Reddit UX Redesign

Upon signing in, the user is presented with two options, either to create a brand new account, or to create a new username within an existing account. This is a new feature created for power users.

The decision to create tabs over buttons is to cut down one step in the process, if there were buttons, there would have to be an additional modal before this one. It also allows users to toggle between both screens without having to go back.

"Enable New User Tips" is checked by default for
Inline error messages will show up as each field is filled in.
Once an existing user adds a new username to their existing account, they will be greeted by this message that will show very briefly.
In order for an existing user to create a new account, all they need is their existing reddit username and password and their desired new username. This will automatically link it to their existing account.
Once a new user adds creates an account, they will be greeted by this message that will show very briefly.
If a brand new user enables the user tips, then they will show up as as small floating bubbles, and will help the new user get acquainted with reddit.

Only one tip with show at a time. The first tip will say "click the tips to learn more."

Tips will appear for 5 seconds each as long as the user does not close it out before. No tip will be longer than one sentence. It will introduce a concept to the user. If a user is interested to learn now about that particular topic, they can click on the bubble and it will take then to a page where they can learn more.

The subsequent tips will educate the users based on their interactions with the site. If a user hover over a particular area for at least five seconds, a tip about that particular subject will pop up.

The more a user responds to the tips (either by clicking or not closing it out) the more tips will show and the more advanced they will become. If a user closes out 5 tips in a row within one second, the tips will disable themselves, a user will be able to reactivate the tip within their personal settings.
If a user has multiple accounts, they are able to access them easily by clicking the down arrow by their name
This is the exiting reddit homepage that anyone can access without being logged in. It preloads subreddits for a user to browse.
This is the homepage redesign. The subreddits are now more easily accessible via a permanent left navigation where they also have the options to add and save content are now. Before, users had to click a drop down menu to access their subreddits.

Users are now also able to easily subscript and unsubscribe from subreddits as well as change the order
of them.

Users are now also able to easily subscript and unsubscribe from subreddits as well as change the order of them.

The "Favorite Subreddits" are stationary and do not move, as opposed to "All Subreddits" which (depending on how many a user is subscribed to) can scroll through.

The homepage now has 3 view styles: a list view, an expanded view, and a grid view, that can be changed by clicking on the icons. Each view has its own affordance, and what a user decides on depends on what the viewer prefers. Currently, reddit only has one viewing style, which is most similar to the list view shown here.

The list view allow the user to easily and quickly scan all the post titles. Users are able to vote on posts without having to click a link. Posts now also have an icon system so users can easily recognize what type of post it is. Users are also able to save, share, favorite or close out link from this view via the icons on the right, which are consistent in all view styles.
When a user clicks in a link within the list view, that link expands in the same browser page, that way the user doesn't have to have to leave the main page, which is how is it currently on reddit, its a big missed opportunity and its an outward path from that core than can easily be avoided.

If a user does want to see the full post within a page in the browser, the user can click "see full post" and the page will be opened in a new tab in the browser window.
The expanded view, is the same as the expanded view within the list view, but the posts are all opened.
The grid view is a hybrid of the affordances between the list view and the expanded view. The user is still has all the same functionalities and sees a preview of the post like the expanded view, but is able to see more posts are once as with the list view.
The grid view is the only view with a hover state. The hover view is where the user is able to see the amounts of votes a post has as well as up or down vote a post.
If a user would like to view an expanded post, they are able to click on the top section of the post where the title and information is which opens up the post as in the expanded view.
These are the existing search results and advanced search pages. In order for a user to do an advanced search, they must learn how to type the query in a very specific syntax which is not easy for most users to understand, this only makes the learning curve for reddit even higher.

Although reddit separates subreddits from posts within the search results, it is difficult to realize that because it is in the place where users are used to seeing advertisements typically placed.
Within the new search view, users now have the option to filter their search results more easily.

Subreddits are now more easily seen with more designation and separation.
If more than 15 subreddits are returned in the search, arrows will appear prompting users to scroll left and right between columns.
Power users are still able to conduct a search with the appraise syntax if they chose, but now they are also able so save their specific search criteria as filters for quick and easy access at a later pint in time.
Proposed first round mock of reddit homepage.

Each subreddit's header is still modifiable.

The grayscale color scheme keeps the users attention on the posts.

There is less information under the titles of each post, instead, the information is now right aligned.
