Golf enthusiasts living in or visiting South Carolina should make time for The Ocean Course on Kiawah Island, which is the number one course in the state and the number 24 course in the United States, according to Golf Digest. Kiawah Island Golf Resort’s Ocean Course was developed in 1991 by Pete and Alice Dye for the express purpose of hosting that year’s Ryder Cup. Each hole of the challenging course is lined by sawgrass, and every green is shaped by complex slopes. Furthermore, bunkers are expanded by neighboring sand dunes, presenting golfers with a variety of difficulties to navigate.

Of course, the island course is not without its beauty. Spanning three miles of South Carolina coastline, the fairways and greens have been raised to give golfers a spectacular view of the ocean throughout the day. That being said, the exposure also allows coastal winds to play even more tricks with the golf ball.

The Ocean Course hosted the 2012 PGA Championship, and will do so again in 2021. The course was updated by Dye in 2002 and 2011.
