BIRDWATCHER'S HUT

The project area is a water landscape on the banks of the river Maas, between Borgharen (the Netherlands) and Smeermaas (Belgium). This landscape can change every day and the borders between land and water are never stable, because this zone is a flood area of the river.
It is protected as such by Rijkswaterstaat (the Dutch Directorate- General for Public Works and Water Management), with actual urgency due to the facts of climate change.

Design intervention is a hut in this landscape to lodge one person, an ornithologist.
The person's activities are highly dependent on the environment. The design of the hut is therefore a unique architectural intervention that expresses an intuitive need for stability in relation to the dynamic water landscape. Tectonics is a guiding principle in the design, the building method of the hut is timber frame construction.
Another guiding principle is the vision on sustainability of the delicate landscape.
