Open Data Repositories

Data repositories for humans

The University of Warsaw is one of the best Polish academies. With the increasing role of data, high demand for scientific research, and growing complexity of the scientific environment, the University of Warsaw saw an opportunity to create a medium for accessible and efficient data processing. We have partnered with the University of Warsaw to develop a systematic and cohesive solution for storing and managing complex data from every possible source – a system that could be easily improved and expanded in the future. Our goal was to start with complete visual design systems and web applications for three data repositories: Repository for Macromolecular Xtallography, Repository for Social Data and Repository for Open Data.

Simple solutions for complex data

To better understand the complexity of the challenge, we conducted product design workshops with an international team of doctors and professors. We gathered an enormous amount of data that was later analyzed and deconstructed. The result was a simple, yet flexible design system backed up by the best user experience practices and the highest development standards. Basic shapes and colors are a foundation for a visual language that we have developed and implemented across all repositories on every platform. Each part of the system is distinct, but together they create user-friendly data repository software.

From print to digital

We wanted to maintain unity and consistency across all devices. It is impossible to create each possible implementation, so we decided to use a set of rules and standards that can be easily implemented. The core of the system is a web application to share, preserve, cite, explore and analyze research data. Everything in one place to show the real beauty of big data.

Data accessible from any device

Accessibility and usability have been the core of our product design efforts. We have developed solutions that can effortlessly be displayed on any screen and device by anyone. We have applied stringent rules from WCAG 2.1 standard and the best usability practices. Managing big data is challenging, so we wanted to make sure that we are developing a solution that allows users to focus on their work, not technological limitations.
