To miasto skąpane w oparach dymu tytoniowego, miasto nocnych klubów, prostytutek, recydywistów, skorumpowanych policjantów - gdzie morderstwo popełnia się tak samo łatwo, jak wypala kolejnego papierosa.
Główny bohater i narrator książki, detektyw Philippe Marlowe, porusza się po tym zdegenerowanym świecie i opisuje go z sobie tylko właściwą dawką specyficznego, czarnego humoru, który towarzyszy mu nawet w najbardziej krytycznych sytuacjach.
W oprawie graficznej książki postanowiłam skupić się przede wszystkim na perspektywie Marlowe'a. Poprzez liczne zabiegi formalne starałam się oddać jego nonszalancką postawę wobec brutalnej rzeczywistości Miasta Aniołów lat czterdziestych. Zmieniające się wielkości i kroje pism odzwierciedlają dobitny, gorzki, często autoironiczny dowcip słynnego detektywa. Wykorzystanie fragmentów kadrów filmowych z licznych hollywoodzkich ekranizacji kryminałów Chandlera i wizerunku aktorów wcielających się w postać Marlowe'a, pozwala na jeszcze wnikliwsze przyjrzenie się intrygującej postaci słynnego detektywa.
In his iconic detective story from the 1940s, Raymond Chandler perfectly captures the dark, dense atmosphere of Los Angeles from that time. This city is bathed in the fumes of tobacco smoke; it is the city of nightclubs, prostitutes, repeat offenders, corrupt policemen - where murder is committed just as easily as it is to smoke another cigarette.
The main character and narrator of the book, detective Philippe Marlowe, moves through this degenerated world and describes him in its own way with specific, black sense of humor that accompanies him even in the most critical situations.
In the graphic design of the book, I decided to focus primarily on Marlowe's perspective. Through numerous formal efforts, I tried to reflect his nonchalant attitude towards the brutal reality of the City of Angels in the 1940s. The changing sizes and typefaces reflect the distinct, bitter, often self-ironic wit of the famous detective. The use of fragments of film stills from numerous Hollywood film adaptations of Chandler's detective stories and the images of actors playing the role of Marlowe allows for an even closer look at his intriguing character.
