Nightlife in the Arctic

Imagine crawling around on these rocks 6 years in a row without using them in one single photo! In 2019 I finally pulled out a shot using the rocks as a solid foreground with its amazing leading lines together with the beautiful Aurora Borealis dancing on the night sky.

Color Symphony

I saw the Aurora Borealis only twice during 7 days back in February 2019, which is not a lot! The weather conditions were harsh and on this night most of the Lofoten islands were covered by clouds. We had a tiny opening between the clouds at the iconic Skagsanden Beach. The luck was on our side! A belt of Northern Light danced around above the ocean. Unfortunately, even more, clouds appeared and the opening started to close. It’s a hard place to do night photography when you have clouds the right of the mountain. The clouds pick up a lot of color pollution from a small town. In this case, I think the colors compliment each other, working great together!

Autumn light of Lofoten

The Aurora Borealis captured on a calm and clear Autumn night in the great Lofoten archipelago, Northern Norway. I did a rather spontaneous trip to Lofoten for a few days to capture the season change in this amazing area of Norway. I had the luck on my side because a G1 solar storm was predicted to hit the earth during these days, which would increase the Aurora Borealis activity.
During the day I scouted this area and if it would have the potential for a night shoot with the Aurora - it defiantly had! So I went back during the evening, as I packed out my equipment the light on the sky started to show up! This was just the beginning of an incredible night. The Aurora kept on dancing on the sky from 8 pm to 3 am.
Since I've had prepared for this location I had a more technically shot in mind. I usually just take one capture with the whole scene but in this case I went low and close the edge of the water with the camera. Just to capture the beautiful Autumn leaves, perfect for an interesting background. From here I did 8 horizontal shots upwards which I've combined in my post-process to create a vertical panorama out of the 8 horizontal captures. The result of this is just remarkable and I'm really happy about this photo!

The Nordic Treeline

February 2019 was my 4th visit to Lofoten in Northern Norway. After countless of hours delay in Oslo I was greeted by this amazing sight when the plane arrived at our final destination. The Aurora Borealis danced around on the night sky above Harstad-Narvik Airport. It was really late and I went straight to a nearby hotel to get some rest for the journey to Lofoten the next day. I was too excited and couldn't sleep so I took all my gear! I had to get out and capture the beautiful light! It was a challenge! Going out not knowing the area and combining it with waist-deep snow made it a challenge. The Aurora picked up and I just had to find the best position which turned out to be this treeline on top of a small hill. I ended up sleeping 4 hours that night because of the flight delays in Oslo and because I was way too excited and had to shoot the Aurora, I was happy that I went out! This was the only real show I saw during the next 7 days in Lofoten because of bad bad weather!

Autumn Nights

I'm pretty sure that I found a new favorite location in Lofoten during my last trip to Norway back in September 2019. My first real solo trip with my camera, I usually travel with some friends or my girlfriend, but not this time. Autumn in Lofoten is quite remarkable! The place is covered in fall colors and during the night the Lady Aurora will appear on the night sky. I'm looking forward to visiting this spot again during February 2020. Hopefully, I can get some beautiful snowy captures from here!

Toxic Lake

The first sight of the Aurora Borealis during an early Autumn evening in Lofoten, Northern Norway. Because of shooting towards west where the Sun sets, it was quite a battle to not overexpose the sky. Even though it was really dark you could still see the sky being rather bright towards the west. I managed to get a few shots, a brighter exposure for the landscape and a darker exposure of the sky. The two photos has been merged in Photoshop during the post process and this is the final result.
I really liked this spot. The lake was completely still creating a blank mirror effect with the mountains. Just a gorgeous scene with a simple straight-on composition!

The Butterfly Wing

I really like this capture of the Aurora Borealis above Haukland Beach in Lofoten, Northern Norway!
The form of the Aurora looks like a wing of a Butterfly and the reflections in the shallow water creates some fantastic symmetry.
The light show went on for hours one week ago which made me able to shoot multiple places during the same evening and night, perfect when you are only in the area for a few days!

Green Fire

Green fire or just the Aurora Borealis dancing in the night sky above a small lake between a few mountains in the beautiful Lofoten archipelago, Northern Norway.
This was the first appearance of the Aurora Borealis that night, a G1 solar storm had reached the earth boosting the activity quite a lot. It has been a while since I've seen such a show. It just kept on all night!
I did a few different compositions in this small area which has 3 lakes. My head convinced me to use the grass on the edge of the lake as leading lines and I think it works quite okay.
This is the true Autumn colors of Lofoten!

Northern Skies

A small pond of water at Haukland Beach worked perfectly as a foreground to capture the strong Aurora Borealis together with the mountains in the distance. A quite beautiful Autumn night in Lofoten, Northern Norway. A solar storm was predicted for these days and oh boy, the Aurora raged on the clear sky that night!

Towers of Lofoten

A remarkable Autumn night in the Lofoten archipelago, Northern Norway. These mountainous towers stand as guardians when driving towards the small village of Nusfjord. An overwhelming sight in daylight but even more beautiful during the night with the Aurora Borealis above!
Remember to bring your safety vest if you decide to capture photos here! It's pitch black here during the night and accidents can happen!
