CNN has reported that in the first 46 weeks of 2019, there have been 45 school shootings throughout America - on average, nearly one per week. Since the Columbine High incident in 1999, school shootings have resulted in 146 deaths and 310 injuries, and have affected 245 primary and secondary schools in the US.

The Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research (SIEPR) conducted a study to determine the impact of shootings on the mental health of surviving students in the affected schools. According to the study, the shootings have resulted in an increase in the use of antidepressants among youth.

That research sample size included 44 shootings between January 2008 and April 2013. The team gathered a near universe of all antidepressant prescriptions in retail pharmacies and the addresses of the issuers of the prescriptions. The information on antidepressant prescription rates within a five-mile radius of the schools was compared with those in localities 10 to 15 miles away from where the shootings occurred.

According to the findings, there was a 21 percent increase in antidepressant use among the 20-year-olds-and-under in the localities where the school shootings occurred. The SIEPR study has concluded that, far from becoming de-sensitized to these incidents because of their frequency these days, survivors of such shootings deal with real mental health consequences after going through such an experience.
