InDesign Magazine Cover and Spread - DSGN 220

InDesign Magazine Cover and Spread
For this Project, we were asked to use InDesign to lay out a magazine cover for the fictional publication of our choosing and a leading or feature page followed by a 2-page magazine spread on the same topic.
Progress Work
To start off, I took the first image from UnSplash, and wanted to use that as the magazine cover, as it not only fits the dimensions and it also looks really good as a cover. After placing the image, I used a font called Dimitri from DaFont. I made it white with a black stroke. It looked really nice on the top of the image.
After placing the Title, I added in a barcode and also added in a QR code, and put those at the bottom of the canvas. After placing those, I then made up some stuff and made a sidebar. At first I used small lines to split the information. Ultimately, I removed the lines and done some better spacing between the text, allowing better flow and readability.
Next I decided to work on the spread. Starting on that, I decided to place an image from Pexels, and make it fit as best as possible. Then I added my text, using the same as the cover text. The text being white, and having a black stroke. I pasted the title, who the article was made by, The PC Gamer Staff, and also put their subtitle under that as well.
After that, I put the article on all of the columns and tried my best to space it out to make room for the images.
After getting the layout the best way I wanted it, I then added the images with their credits under them. I still had to do some adjustments. It still had something missing from it. I added in boxes behind the text with their opacity lowered, making things a lot more readable.
I done a final edit, making the P bigger and removing the article information. I moved them to the page before. I also made the background a little bigger hiding the splash of yellow in the top right not visible.
After adding that, I used an image from Pexels, and rotate it 90 degrees. I had to scale it down some so it'd fit really well on the page. Then I re-added the title, and put it on a line, and curved it so it'd flow nice on the page, and also grab the reader's attention. I also added in who wrote the article, and made it the same color, (or as close as) the circle. I then done the same thing with the subtext. I put it on a curved line, and put it at the bottom in between the ring.
I also removed the mouse image from the spread, removed its background, and added a glow, putting it in the middle of the ring, making it the eye catcher as well. After that I added a small hook to get the reader interested in the article. I made the question bigger and made it the yellow from the fire.
After some small final touches, (such as making page numbers), I felt like I was finished.
All in all this was a monster of a project in my opinion. It was fun to do, don't get me wrong. It's also made me somewhat comfortable and a little more experienced with InDesign. I'm really proud with how it turned out and I think that shows in the final product.
