Art South Africa: Fold-out Cover

Fold-out Cover
This is a project I did as a third-year multimedia and graphic design student. The fold-out cover addresses the South African problem of poor infrastructure and I use the iceberg metaphor to illustrate my concept. The iceberg metaphor uses a floating iceberg with its top part sticking out above the water level, but underneath the water level, there is the bottom part of the iceberg which is a lot bigger than the top part. This is misleading to the true size of the iceberg. It is also used in psychology to illustrate personality or the subconscious.
I divided the iceberg into two parts with left half beginning at the top of the iceberg-which is the part of the iceberg that is visible above the water-with the city Johannesburg. As you go down the left half of the iceberg the infrastructure gets gradually worse. On the right side of the iceberg, that is the part that is visible when the cover is folded out. The top starts with infrastructure that is poor or destroyed and it gets better as you go down the right side of the iceberg. This is done to illustrate what it will take to fix the problem of poor infrastructure.
