Challenge Coin Design

OVERVIEW
Helping Up Mission is a community dedicated to helping men and women fighting addiction and homelessness in Baltimore, Maryland. As a gift to graduates of their recovery programs they contacted me to design a challenge coin.
OBJECTIVE
In the spirit of those challenge coins often received in the military, the objective was to create a coin that would serve as a visual token of the experience and growth that was gained through the program.
SOLUTION
An oak tree was chosen as the central, symbolic, representation of long lasting growth in the design. Below are seen several sketches in which various solutions were explored. In the end, a scene of downtown Baltimore viewed from a popular park in the area was chosen as the backdrop for the design.
