While there are a number of different types of scaffolding that assist in the building, renovation, and restoration of buildings, there are three basic types: supported scaffolding, suspension scaffolding, and aerial lifts.

Supported scaffolding is built from the ground up and can consist of one or more platforms. The material used can include lumber, metal poles, or bamboo. It can be affixed to both the building and the ground, and is occasionally on wheels to allow for mobility.

Suspended scaffolding is suspended from the roof, which allows it to access parts of very tall buildings. It also allows for mobility, as the scaffolding can be raised and lowered from pulleys and chains or wire rope to the level that is required.

Finally, there are aerial lifts, which are vehicles that have devices to elevate people. These are most often used in repair work and short-term construction.
