STAGING THE MESSAGE IN COMMUNICATION DESIGN
ON STRATEGY, METHOD AND LANGUAGE USE

Staging the message is an educational format developed by Els Kuijpers and Jan Van Toorn, which focuses on strategies, languages and methods used in communication design. The format was proposed as a seven-days workshop during the Training Week
at ISIA Urbino in Spring 2019 - and it provided the students with theoretical and practical tools for an editorial method of visual production. In reaction to the virtual realism
of the spectacle dominating mainstream media, which prevents a significant use of words and images, the workshop promotes complex and alternative forms of articulation
in order to stimulate an active interpretation by the reader. It also introduces a method
for collecting and editing information in a way that lays the foundation for the mise-en-scene. The assignment was to create a visual essay.

Our concept implements the dynamics of TRUTH OR DARE? verbal game to stage
a metaphor on the perception of privacy in the post-internet era. For the realization,
we created two decks of cards (one for the TRUTH questions, one for DARE instructions) and set up a room to film the game, that involved two participants at a time. Obviously none of the participants knew how the game would have been played
and they previously signed a consent form that gave us the permission for the processing of their personal data. Together, they were involved in a mechanism meant to make
the many virtual requests we are subjected to, while using internet and social networks, tangible: therefore sharing of privacy and access to sensitive personal info. The staging
of this game was intended to show a moral: what we often submit to on the internet
– if expressed in the real world – arouses sensations of discomfort, which triggers 
a thought on how we relate through the screens. This booklet is the video paper trailer, 
the cover artwork traces all the tools' positions placed on the table we employed to play our version of TRUTH or DARE.
