The Rest
As part of an exploration of the theme Self and Other
In this work, the self is present in my severed head being prominently featured in the composition. The image represents the conclusion to an action or sequence of events. The self in this image is not suffering at present. It is at rest. The state of the self in this work creates the other. This forces the viewer is left to wonder what happened to the self and creates their own other and they’re own sequence of events that lead up to my beheading. In a general context the work has to do with the complexity of the self in that it can never truly be understood with an other being able to alter the self in such a way that it is impossible to discern who or what the other is and how the self ended up how it is. The title “The Rest” refers to both a rest in terms of the state that the head is in as well as acting as a question to the viewer about what the rest or other is.
