Design for Just Ripe, a Cafe and Micromarket

This project was the design of a tenant build-out for Just Ripe, a small grocery and cafe space that focuses on fresh locally grown and organic foods. Given a relatively small space the first step was the segregation of front of house (grocery, serving counter and kitchen, and cafe seating) from back of house functions (prep kitchen, storage, office, and restroom).

The front of house with the serving kitchen, merchandising area, grocery shelving, refrigeration coolers, and cafe seating, and drink and bussing station consisted of a lot of elements in a very small space. A key driver for the project was to unify the elements to create a cohesive space that did not feel simply like a bunch of parts. To do this I focused on a simple organization with a neutral pallet.  I wanted the overall feel of the space to complement that food. To do this a simple bright color pallet was chosen for accent elements such as housing for the lights.

Being a relatively new company, but one with a delicious future, the budget for the Just Ripe space was creative and modest. Therefore we tried to use inexpensive elements and readily available items.

The existing space had a dropped soffit that ran from about 15 feet in and then all the way back. I knew I wanted to use this as a soffit to highlight the location of the ordering counter and service kitchen. A focal ceiling was created for this soffit area using salvaged plywood sheets the owner had saved from being trashed and inexpensive fluorescent fixtures. The pattern design of the ceiling is an interpretation of the genetic fingerprinting of a radish. The radish of course being used in the branding for Just Ripe.

Built in cabinetry was used to combine specialty merchandising with the drink and bussing station. The drink / bussing portion insertion is in an accent color.

Info-graphics on the bulkhead above the refrigeration coolers tell the story of the food, where it comes from, when it is in season, as well as the story of the genetic fingerprint pattern on the ceiling.

If in downtown Knoxville, check out the delicious food at Just Ripe, although the final build-out will not be exactly like this.
