Shiseido: a Modular Pop-up Store

Shiseido 2018 Modular Pop Up: Emergence
National University of Singapore (2018)
In collaboration with Shiseido Travel Retail
Platform by Dr. Christian Gilles Boucharenc
Designed with Hannah Tan
Emergence is a system of modular pieces that come together in a myriad of permutations to form pop-up stores situated at Changi airport for 4 brands under the umbrella of Shiseido Group:

Shiseido, NARS, Dolce & Gabbana, and Clé de Peau.

The dynamic transformation from 2D planes to 3D planes represents Shiseido group as youthful, dynamic, and full of growth. Inspired from the dynamic lines of the mood board, Emergence sought to bring an element of surprise through rhythmic emergence from the ground. It uses the medium, furnitecture, to create something unique from typical retail spaces. By integrating the analogy of ribbons, it portrays Shiseido’s spirit of hospitality and generous gifting nature.
We started by experimenting with materials and explored the balance between rigid lines and the graceful flow of ribbons to come up with curvatures perfect for all 4 brands. The permutations, placements, size & thickness of strips, and gaps between the strips were carefully curated to accentuate each brand’s DNA. Our iterations kept the continuous journey of each strip, flowing up and down rhythmically to different heights to balance the hierarchy and attention within spaces.
Our modular system consists of plastic strips and metal frames that when combined together portray continuous ribbons flowing to form surfaces to place products. To interchange between brands, the simple plastic strips can be quickly spray painted and stickers are used to change its design.
The removal of the detachable strip also affords for easy transportation, allowing all frames to be stacked and fitted on typical 60 by 90cm trolleys. Setting up is quick as they slide along one another. Taperings are also slot along the edges.
