Woman On The Edge Of Time

The aim of this project was to re-design the cover of a utopian novel. The novel I was given was ‘Woman On The Edge Of Time’ written by female author and feminist Marge Piercy.

It’s main character, a Mexican-American woman called Connie is wrongly admitted to a mental institution. Whilst inside the asylum, she keeps managing to slip in and out of her dream world to escape the real world; she is taken into her Utopia set in Mattapoisett, Massachusetts, USA in the year 2137. By the end, the reader is left to decide whether Connie’s visits to the future are real or just a product of her own mind & there is no real way of knowing for a fact.

A primarily feminine story, the book is a physiological thriller which has numerous underlining genres such as racism, sexuality & gender, hierarchy & supremacy.

Taking all these factors into account, I decided to follow the physiological aspect, and how mentally damaging and distorted Connie’s mind is becoming by being imprisoned inside the asylum. I draw a large number of tallies & other shapes on the wall, to show how long she has been in there for as the time she lingers there increases & the amount of time she spends in her Utopia increases as a result.
