A multi-purpose desk lamp, aesthetically inspired by Nordic cabin architecture and
mid-century fire places. A large translucent roof provides soft bounce lighting against the wall, while a smoke stack rises above the work surface to provide task lighting.
The construction of the lamp consists of a translucent resin cast onto the wood body and each face is fly cut to achieve perfectly planar material transitions
After the exterior of the lamp is squared, a long reach end-mill is used to core
the interior to make room for the electronic components and expose
the resin diffuser to the LED emitters.
The vertical mill was a key tool in the creation of the Hearth Lamp; here the smoke stack is affixed in a jig while the features that will hold the task lighting are machined.
LED strip lights were used to achieve the thin smoke stack task lighting while square emitter boards would provide the roofs bounce lighting. A 120vAC-12vDC converter will also need to fit into the exterior of the lamp to provide power to the LEDs.
An absurdly sturdy foundation of Aluminum billet will be the connection point for the smoke stack, and present two satisfyingly tactile toggle switches
to operate the bounce and task lighting separately.
With a finish of Danish oil on the cherry wood body of the lamp there is a pronounced contrast in warm and cool tones against the aluminum foundation, switches, and resin.
