MSR Backpacking Stove
From 2016 to 2019, I was a Global Training Specialist at Luxion, the makers of KeyShot. For the RenderWorld 2018, I presented a couple of workshops, one focused on workflow, the other on animation. I chose to create a 3D model of MSR's Pocket Rocket folding backpacking stove. This model is accurate down to the millimeter and fully jointed and assembled in Fusion 360. I had lots of fun building this clever piece of design and engineering.
Inspiration
I wanted to animate this product like something much larger and more significant that the actual product. Obsessed with Kubrik's 2001, I looked to how the camera angles and movements of the ships were composed, and drew upon that for inspiration. The lighting was also heavily inspired by photos of space ships with few harsh area light planes.
Lighting
As mentioned, I really wanted to capture this space-like feeling though movement and lighting. The stove was lit with just a few area light planes and an entirely black environment.
