Numbers and Bottles

My name is Adan Banuelos. I was born in 1985.
When I was growing up, my father was a sign maker and muralist. I remember his broad collection of pencils, brushes, paint cans, and papers that were sorted throughout our garage. I loved to watch him sketch and paint letters and signage layouts. My curiosity of lettering was born from those experiences.
My Process:

1. Start by printing a large solid light grey number on an 8.5" x 11" sheet. I used "Tw Cen MT" font for this set of numbers.
2. Once the number is printed, sketch a composition onto the printed paper.
3. Place the number sketch under a blank sheet of Graphics 360 paper. Use masking tape to keep it in place as you draw.
4. Draw the bottles and hatch patterns using a Sakura Pigma Micron pen. I like to use size 08. By not using pencil on the same paper with the ink, there won't be any smudges of pencil or ink from erasing.
5. Scan the ink drawing at 300 dpi, and open it in Illustrator.
6. Use Image Trace to create a solid black and white image.
7. Expand the image.
8. Ungroup the vector paths and delete all the white shapes.
9. Group the black paths and add any backdrops on a new layer.
