Spaceman - short film

Film

A captain's infatuation with his ship leaves his lieutenant pining for the planet they left behind.
From writer/director Jono Schaferkotter comes a heart-wrenching look at love in outer space. This sci-fi epic is sure to surprise you as it explores a young woman’s relationship with an eccentric captain and his defective spaceship. It's been described as "a penetrating portrayal of where men and women often diverge as relationships mature and often fizzle" (Wallace Baine, SC Sentinel). "[Spaceman] is a 15-minute dream circling around the sun; an intimate, existential, space-romance drifting around weightlessly before plummeting into a dramatic crash landing right into the hearts of its spectators"(Brian Echona, Good Times). Traci Hukill from the SC Weekly writes, "...time collapses and reality gets slippery, but one thing remains constant: the dedication to aesthetics"
Spaceman won the jury prize for the 2011  Best  International  Short  at the Israel International SciFi Festival.

"
This poetic film can access content in a different and fresh ways, and emphasizes the human aspect of the mechanical. We look forward to the director's next film."  - Jury
"In local filmmaker Jono Schaferkotter’s Spaceman, time collapses and reality gets slippery, but one thing remains constant: the dedication to aesthetics. Beautiful shots are the hallmark of this 15-minute sci-fi film, which receives it’s premiere this weekend in advance of the Santa Cruz Film Festival later this spring. The music, by Tyler Parkford and Rachel Williams, is first-rate. Three nights of screening and parties feature guest appearances by the director and actors as well as outtakes and bloopers."

“Santa Cruz filmmaker Jono Schaferkotter is throwing a party to celebrate the completion of his new short film titled “Spaceman.” Back in the summer of 2007, Schaferkotter opened his feature-length zombie film “The Beginning” in Santa Cruz to a packed house.

… [Spaceman} is a fanciful vignette of a romantic encounter…  Actors Hamid Nayini and Jennifer Allcott make for an appealing couple, and with nicely understated special effects and original music by Tyler Packford and Rachel Williams, Schaferkotter has created a resonant metaphor for the difficulties of feeling out a relationship.”

"Excellent short film ... Story and visual style were reminiscent of Michel Gondry's Science of Sleep, but without being derivative or a cheesy ripoff (which is frankly what I expect of short films). Excellent art direction, camera work, and visual treatment of the fantasy/reality filmscape. I would recommend this short to anyone who is interested in film-making or in science fiction. I hope to see more productions by this team."
