HOW WE DID IT

PLATFORM/DEVICE
Valve Index, PC and Nvidia Geforce GTX1080Ti

TECHNOLOGIES
Virtual reality, Unreal engine 4, Valve Index, 3ds MAX, Adobe Photoshop

PROJECT DURATION
1 month

Decathlon is the largest sporting goods retailer, that operates in 49 countries. It has recently launched its second store in Kyiv and we have created a VR solution for it.
We developed a VR application, which includes 3 mini-games: skiing, sledding, and snorkeling. And also set up 2 autonomous VR zones in the store.

Challenges
The main difficulty was to make the VR zone as autonomous as possible; provide flawless operation of the application and quite complicated equipment for employees of the store.
Even visitors, who lack experience of using VR, had to understand how the application works by themselves and operate in virtual reality without the help of store employees.

Solutions
We achieved the autonomy of the application thanks to:
- simple interface with tips;

- as simple as we could create control in VR: we are tracking the position of the head and controllers in space so that even the least experienced VR user could enjoy using their body position and only one button;
- the cable from the VR helmet is suspended from the ceiling to prevent users from clinging with their feet;
- base stations are installed in such a way so that visitors could not accidentally move them or disrupt the operation of the VR zone.

To minimize the effect of motion sickness, we applied the following:
In snorkeling, the user stands in one place and holds in his hands a virtual underwater towing vehicle, navigating with his hands. This is a fairly large object, which is always within eyesight and its control does not cause dissonance between the vestibular system and vision.
Before submersion, the visitor puts on a virtual mask for snorkeling, which remains visible with peripheral vision. The presence of a motionless object relative to the player’s head essentially reduces the effect of motion-induced sickness.

In skiing, we implemented control according to a principle "where you look - there you go". We are tracing the tilt and rotation of the head. Tilt to the right/left allows a customer to shift to the sides, without changing the direction of movement, and turning your head allows the user to rotate. Almost all users when turning instinctively leaned to the sides, that’s why there was no discrepancy between the expectation of movement and the result visible with the eyes.

As our client wanted only the users of the loyalty program to have access to VR and store employees to change some parameters in VR zones, we create a configuration file.

Through this file store employees can turn the apps on/off for each zone, enter a session limit in seconds, set the interval between sessions, and regulate movement speeds in each game.  It is also possible to enter the minimum allowable interval between sessions for users to avoid the queue.

To access the app, the visitor has to scan his card with a scanner, placed in each VR zone. All visits are recorded in the database, so the client can track the popularity of the VR zone and the number of visitors on different days.

Results
As a result, we created the VR application with 3 mini-games and set up an autonomous VR zone. It is easy to use and enjoy for customers, and simple in maintenance for Decathlon employees. More than 100 visitors experience the VR zone every day.
