Brief and Background:
Story of Mum utilises digital communication and social media to allow mums to connect virtually. It’s a chance for mums to be creative, to share their stories, to explore what it means to be a mother together in a creative atmosphere.

In a week they wanted a logo designing, which could be displayed in black and white as well as colour, and would would work successfully when reproduced in a multitude of different sizes from small ads to large billboards.

They were fairly set on their current colour scheme, but accepted any ideas for a new tag line to replace their current one “Inspiring Mums to Connect, Create and Celebrate”, as well as new website ideas.

Idea:
After researching community, I found that a seminal psychological paper had broken down the 4 things that are needed to combine in order to create a sense of community:
- Membership
- Influence
-Integration and Fulfillment of Needs
-Shared Emotional Connection

This led to me designing the 4 hands linked together.
The logo has a soft crafted feel, with texture, but also conveys a sense of professionalism and maturity
The original tagline was too long, so I shortened it
The logo also had to function in black and white
The website needed to feel more like a gallery space, as Story of Mum were soon launching a travelling exhibition of their communities creative work.

I redesigned the site to be simple, user friendly and be concentrated on displaying the work of the Story of Mum community.
The new responsive website is made to display images. They had previously displayed some of the sites photos but they were too small and more could be made of theem. I wanted the home page to simply take photos from each page and curate them to form a gallery space. A menu can be accessed via a dropdown.
The Story of Mum format relies heavily on Twitter and interaction between the Story of Mum community when they oraganise ‘Mums’ Make Dates.’ Their digital presence is strengthened by the prominence of their logomark in their avatar, and the minimal look of it reflects the websites gallery feel.
One of the requirements was to demonstrate how the logo could be used in a pop-up exhibition context, “Story of Mum - mums making an exhibiton of ourselves”.
