University Hospital is a teaching hospital for Rutgers University Medical School and other related schools. The 519-bed acute care hospital is comprised of a hospital, an ambulatory care center, doctors’ offices, a tuberculosis clinic, the Waymon C. Lattimore Clinic and the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey. Owned by the state of New Jersey, the hospital is one of the leading centers, and it is the only level one trauma center in New Jersey. In addition to providing care, the hospital is also a research institution.

The hospital serves Newark, which is comprised of 650,000 residents. The challenges the hospital faces include treating common conditions such as obesity, malnutrition, diabetes, and mental illness, among other diseases. To compound this, nearly 30 percent of the residents are uninsured and a quarter is impoverished.
