Fall 2019 Wood I
Instructor: George Gordon

Carving mask project:
This piece attempts to explore the spatial qualities of carving with the language of material and form. If face masks for people represent a certain emotion or attitude of the human, then what do face masks look like for 'wood'?
The negative form of the mask is inspired by the form of pores in wood; the curves and cuts are inspired by the direction of the wood grain. Without much planning, I carved through this project while listening to the formal languages of the piece of wood.
Creating a Walnut Wood Disk & Wood Turning
The walnut wood disk was a practice piece to learn more about making forms and wood finishes.
The wood turning pieces were an attempt to explore compression and retraction through the use of rhythm, directionality, and tapers.
