Design Thinking: Soy Quilombo - Medicina ancestral afro

This project began with the motivation to engage with the Afro-Colombian community to understand their practices, beliefs, and worldview through methodologies such as Human-Centred Design and Participatory Design
While engaging with the Afro-Colombian community, it was imperative to grasp their unique worldview on health and fully comprehend the intricate dynamics that surrounded it.
This led to the exploration of ancestral medicine centers known as Quilombos, situated in various districts of Bogotá, Colombia. These Quilombos originated from a government initiative called "Healthy Territories," aimed at preserving and promoting the Afro-Colombian community and their ancestral medicine knowledge.
These spaces not only provide care for various ailments but also aim to foster connections between individuals and knowledgeable practitioners, fostering a sense of identity construction and community preservation.
To create the installation, it was crucial to engage the senses of touch, sight, smell, and hearing, as these sensory stimuli play a significant role in the formation and development within the Quilombos. Additionally, the incorporation of plants and their utilisation emphasised the profound connection that evolves between individuals and their environment.
The objective of the installation was to educate external actors about the practices performed within the Quilombos, as well as to emphasise the significance of fostering connections between these external actors and community members. This approach aimed to encourage, promote, and preserve the Afro-ancestral medicine practices in Colombia.
