Project One // Hero Image

The instructions for this exercise was to explore our personal culture and contrast it to Seattle's culture. From that, we were then choose a word that expresses our culture and to show our culture through shape, pattern, color, and images. I chose the word "Reflect" because of how important self image was throughout my life as a child. As a child I saw it as a negative thing since I was supposed to be seen as perfect all the time. However, in contrast to Seattle's culture which is very welcoming and open, my negative thoughts about self image turned into positive self expression.

Step One // Typographic Composition

After choosing our word we were then instructed to create patterns with the word using positive and negative space.

In this composition I used mainly serif fonts. I chose to expose the bowls of the letters because I wanted to show movement and the curves of the bowls helped the composition flow. The serifs also added more movement since they added more curves as well.

Step Two // Images

I chose images that had water and mirrors in it to portray reflection and self image. In addition I added pictures of the butterfly clips because they aren't your usual hair clips but they are fun, colorful, and different which is seen as a positive thing for me when expressing oneself.
Step Three // Pattern

For my patterns, I chose to make them a dark brown color in order to contrast with the colors of the images. I wanted to the pattern to be scaled at a smaller size and have less distance in between the objects to also contrast to the images that had a larger scale. I also wanted my pattern to have a "high end brand" style to it to show how my family wanted to be seen as high end and put together. This color palette and pattern was inspired by Louis Vuitton.
Final Hero Image
In my final Hero Image I wanted to show how my culture and my family's culture both equally impacted me and have made me who I am today. I wanted to show contrast with the pattern and images showing my two different cultures. I wanted to create balance between the two, the pattern and image, because in the end they both reflect who I am today.
