In order to achieve optimum voice production, an intact larynx and surrounding structures are required. Throughout life, our voices change. Pitch, volume and quality are important characteristics of the voice. Voice disorders affect vocal pitch, volume, and quality of the child’s voice.

Hypernasality: This is when the mechanism used to close off the oral cavity from the nasal passage does not work correctly during the production of non-nasal sounds, and thus the air and sounds escape from the nose

Hyponasality: This is the lack of appropriate nasal resonance when producing nasal sounds (i.e. /n/, /m/, /ng/). Children will substitute these sounds with oral sounds; more commonly the /b/, /d/ and /g/ sounds.

Vocal nodules and polyps: Vocal nodules are non-cancerous growths on the vocal cords that are the result of vocal abuse. They are exacerbated by on-going vocal abuse. Polyps appear as blisters or bumps on the vocal cords and are sometimes caused by vocal abuse. Symptoms for children who have vocal nodules or polyps are hoarseness or breathiness of the voice, a rough or scratchy voice and vocal or body fatigue.

Activities that work for vocal disorders include:

* Resting the voice and reduce strain on the vocal cords but not shouting or whispering
* Ensure that the child keeps vocal cords well hydrated and moist by frequently sipping       water
* Keep the child away from smoke and dust as these dry the throat and thus strain the   vocal cords

Never forget to consult a doctor when your child shows the symptoms of voice disorder.
