How to Prepare Your Daughter for Her First Period

How to Prepare Your Daughter for Her First Period
First periods can be uncomfortable, scary, and outright terrifying for your daughter. It marks a change in her body, a transition from being a girl to becoming a woman. Though kids can find most of the information online and are educating themselves, it is crucial that as parents you talk to your girls about periods.

But, there is also a lot of false information on internet floating around that could cause more harm to your children. Periods are nothing to be embarrassed about. Assure your daughter that they are a natural phenomenon and should not be treated as a taboo topic.

However, before you begin talking to her, make sure that you have your facts right. Giving her a lesson in biology wouldn’t constitute as a ‘talk’ either. Sit with her when both of you are free, and let her ask questions. Be prepared to answer her questions without brushing them off.

Make It a Family Talk

Just because boys don’t get periods doesn’t mean they should be excluded from the talk. Fathers can and should talk to their daughters about periods. Boys of the house should know it is okay for them to buy sanitary products for their sisters, mothers, or wives.

Get the Details Right

A lot of girls assume that getting periods means they will bleed as if they have a deep cut on the body. Explain that it is not the case. The uterus is as small as a closed fist. The inner lining that comes out of the body in three to four days would fill around 3 tablespoons. Though some women bleed heavily, it is no way similar to a gushing stream of blood.

Visit a Gynecologist

Though it is not mandatory, a small visit to a gynecologist in Delhi might help in clearing the myths and misconceptions about periods. Also, there will be instances when girls find it easier to talk to a doctor than a parent.

Explore the Supplies Together

Talking about periods, pads, tampons, and menstrual cups can be an uncomfortable topic for many people. Girls might tend to resist and ignore conversations. It is necessary for both parties involved to understand that none of these is something out of the ordinary. Take your daughter to buy sanitary pads. Let her see and learn how to pick what suits her best.

Helping her use the pads and tampons the right way is very important. Stay with her in the bathroom, or stay on the other side of the door. However, ensure that she feels comfortable using the supplies.

Empower Your Child

Having periods doesn’t mean she will be sick or has to be bedridden. Do not scare her with the negative symptoms. Also, let her know that she is not the only girl. Every girl goes through this. In addition, teach her to help another girl if she is in need.

Explain about leakage and how she can identify the symptoms. Tell her why it is important to be prepared at all times.
