TOTO iota_Co-living smart bathroom system.

Go through my thesis in 3 minutes.

How might we
Create unique bathroom experience under co-living rental context?

Co-living is a new, synergistic form of housing based on shared economy. Bathroom under this condition transforms from a personal space to a public and shared space. Users are sacrificing themselves to adapt to a new environment, they are expecting experiences personalized just for them, but most of them live in rentals where renovations are not allowed. Iota is a smart bathroom kit includes a hub with smell and sound module, an extra control patch, smart lights and a supportive app. All units require minimum hardware installation and work together to customize experiences based on usersā€™ preferences.

Personalized Bathroom Experience

Iota system can provide customized bathroom experiences for multiple users under co-living scenario with simple interactions.

Detail Product Features

Follow the un-boxing journey to see what physical product features you get with iota.

Digital Application Features

The supportive app can be used to make detailed presets, show bathroom status, arrange bathroom usage schedule and update new services from TOTO. But itā€™s not the main part of the system users need to interact with.

Work Flow

Iota provides users a seamless way to interact with. Simple set-ups can help the system understand userā€™s preferences and connect physical products and digital services. While in use, users can either use the phone to easily get their personalized experience, or quickly use default setting without phone for daily use.

System Map

A series of physical products which provides different experiences, a digital application users can interact with and services by TOTO comprise iota system, these parts work together to provide users personalized experiences in co-living rentals.

Research and Finding

During my interview, I askedĀ Ā ā€œWhat bathroom means for you?ā€Ā , the answers from users are focused on emotional values instead of functional values.

User needs of bathroom is changing from requesting a functional, reliable and usable bathroom to asking for convenience and pleasure.ā€‹ā€‹ā€‹ā€‹ā€‹ā€‹ā€‹

CO-LIVING RENTAL SCENARIO

Co-living is a new, synergistic form of housing based on shared economy. The percentage of renting population is increasing rapidly since thereā€™s big financial benefit of living in a renting style. Users consider sharing bathroom plays different roles based on whether the door is open on closed and also if it is occupied or not.

PERSONALIZED EXPERIENCE

However, when anyone step into the bathroom, even the door is not locked, everyone in this living space will consider it as a private and personal space. They feel safe here and also looking for personalized experience based on their own needs.

NO RENOVATION POSSIBILITY

Renovations are normally not allowed in rentals, especially in bathrooms. So users always try to adapt themselves to the new environment.

Design Opportunities

TARGET GROUP

People under 18-40 years old are major population live in co-living rentals, and they normally have the mindset of pursuing changes for better living experience.

EMOTIONAL CHANGE

Users are always lacking a sense of belonging since they are moving quite often and need to adapt to new environment which doesn't belong to them. So thereā€™s a need to make users feel they own the experience instead of just living in this space.

Concept User Test

Concept Development

After concept development, four concepts were generated. They share similar idea but are slightly different. I decided to test concept 2 and 4 to evaluate them. Concept 2 is phone based while concept 4 tries to introduce an experience without phone.

USER TEST

To simulate how my concept can work as a system, I got all experience units, built physical mock-ups and digital interfaces for users to interact with to test the usability of each concepts.

USER FEEDBACK

After 9 user test, I got valuable feedback from different perspectives.

PLACEMENT ANALYSIS

Since power sockets are normally around basin, the product should be possible to mount on wall and place on any surfaces.

Exhibition & Client Feedback

UID 19Ā is a ceremony which many companies and design studios join to look for new ideas and talents, I presented my insights and concepts in front ofĀ 200+Ā people with various background.

UID 19 exhibition is a part of deliverables. I had two posters, one is used to show bathroom environment and aĀ 1:1 modelĀ is placed on top of it, and the second one shows detail features of iota. The physical model is made by 3D printing and CNC milling, with lighting effect and sound effect coded by arduino, it could achieve part of authentic experience of iota.

After finishing the project, I went to TOTOā€™s headquarter in Japan to give a presentation to their whole design department.Ā
I presented the project and also how human-center design can influence a company that put more attention on new technologies.Ā The presentation were highly appreciated and we are currently negotiating about developing the concept.

Thanks for watching.
