The Penguin and Puffin awards briefs required the production of new covers for the books; ‘The Big Sleep’ by Raymond Chandler and ‘The Wind in the Willows’ by Kenneth Grahame, that would help bring the books to a new audience.
I decided to create covers that were respectful of the traditional Penguin & Puffin style and yet communicated the subject matter with a fresh tone.
Both of the covers are designed to be part of a larger set. The combination of simple, black and white line art and strong, colourful, Saul Bass inspired typography give the finished books a modern and elegant look.
