Shadow Box Project

Introduction: In this project that I will be showing you guys is a Shadow box that I created for my art culture course. The objective of this assignment was to create a shadow box on either an important event in your life, or a dream/aspiration you have for your future. I chose to do my dream of moving to New York City someday. I am in love with what the city has to offer, and like making changes in my life. I also have many New York paintings, and art pieces in my bedroom so I thought it was smart to make something I could see having in my own room as decor!

Materials Used:
-Shadow Box (Purchased from Michaels Art Supplies)
-Sketch Box
-Sharpie
-Felt Tip Ink Pen
-Pencils
-Glue
-Scissors
-Ruler
-Pictures from Supreme Book

Creative Process: Since the idea was to demonstrate a desire or dream for the future I wanted to create a collage of images that best describes New York City. I began brainstorming concepts, and ideas that I think of when I think of the city. For example, I began to draw lights, subway signs, the main tourist attractions such as Central park, and Statue of Liberty.

Workflow is demonstrated under each image.

The first step in the project I did was start drawing little pictures that I would later cut out, and paste onto the background of the shadow box.
I tried to draw images, and ideas that clearly would symbolize New York City. I wanted it to be a black and white vibe as well.
I drew an airplane ticket that says "From Toronto, to New York" and of course a well known statue. The Statue of Liberty.
At this point, I kind of let my creativity take over. I tried to draw the first things that came to mind when thinking of New York. I continued to draw little road signs, welcome signs, and much more.
I then used pictures from my Supreme book, and found images that would look good as background. I then cut them out, and glued them onto a sheet of black paper.
I looked for images in alleyways, graffiti art, subway stations, and plain brick walls.
After I glued the background images onto the paper, it was ready to start placing the images I drew onto it. I wanted it to look like a collage, and kinda place them scattered throughout the paper.
FINAL PRODUCTION: Above is a picture of the final production. I placed my artwork into the shadow box.

Conclusion: For this project, I didn't really have a lot of rough ideas or thumbnails. I was a little rushed in time, so I went along with it and trusted my creative process while completing the shadow box. Some challenges that I faced throughout this project was that it took a long time to think of original ideas. I wanted it to represent my future goals, by using simple images to show the audience the city and place. Some constructive criticism that I noticed was that I tend to rush into things. I would have taken a bit more time in the planning process, and would have been more happy with the outcome of the project.
