Plitvice Lakes
Plitvice Lakes National Park is one of the oldest and largest national parks in Croatia. he national park was founded in 1949 and is in the mountainous karst area of central Croatia, at the border to Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The national park is world-famous for its cascading lakes, 16 of which are currently visible on the surface. These were formed by the confluence of several small rivers and by underground karst tributaries. The lakes arranged along a flow direction are separated from each other by natural barriers, a characteristic of unique natural processes. The particularly unstable travertine barriers are caused by an interplay of flowing water, air and vegetation.
