KATANA - Floor Lamp
Katana is a distinctive floor lamp, entirely made of carbon fibre, designed by Valerio Cometti and Paolo Balzanelli of Arkispazio.
There are some interesting aspects hidden behind the design of this lamp: its distinctive silhouette looks even more impressive given the size of the lamp, the slender profile of the two “blades” and their variable sections that required the use of a precious forming process (entirely made by hand) and the use of carbon fibre.
Katana and carbon fibre have gone hand in hand since the first sketch: only by using carbon fibre we have been able to reach the stiffness and lightness that allows the small weight sitting at the end of the horizontal blade to dynamically modify the position of the lightbulb. Cometti and Balzanelli have even specified a particular weave, because they wanted the carbon fibre thread to be visible only from a close distance.
In order to avoid mechanical details such as rivets and joints to spoil the grace of the Katana, they carefully designed the way the two blades meet each other:albeit still movable, they elegantly penetrate one into the other.
During Euroluce 2009, the Katana in white with a semi-matte finish has beenunveiled: the carbon fibre is no longer visible, it has become a precious secret. Since 2011, Katana also expresses the emotion of music thanks to the Bluetooth technology driving a refined audio system well hidden inside its slender body.
