SHUNKIN is a ballet based on a short story by Tanizaki Jun'ichiro, also famous author of  "In Praise of Shadows", about a blind woman named Shunkin and her lover and servant, Sasuke. The narrator happens to be passing the graves of Shunkin and Sasuke, and thus begins the investigation and narration of their relationship. My Design shows the two Lovers´ heads like huge gravestones on artificial, soft gravel. The Back consists of an enormous golden Canvas in a manner of a very vivid, yet dark and hypnotic arrangement of different gold-tones and ripped papers to create an aesthetics of Wabi-Sabi- the recognition of a sensitivity to natural processes and materials, and to the pleasures of simplicity. Fashion Designer Laura Theiss created beautiful Costumes in a traditional japanese manner, with lots of original silks and tafts.
