BLUE PLANET
Just dive in and go with the flow...
French Riviera, August 2019
This series of photographs was taken in the summer of 2019 in the sea near Cannes (the French Riviera), and is part of an ongoing project over the last 4 years to capture the silky smoothness of surface flows and the bare, and powerful, beauty of the sea. I am fascinated by the Big Blue of the Mediterranean, both above the water and below. These images are the product of tens of hours spent shooting in the water, as these shots – perfectly composed straight off the camera – depend on a variety of conditions and are rare to get. Here, the varying tones of blue captured by the camera reveal smooth and silky flows, reminiscent of billowing fabric, that are invisible to the naked eye. The purity of the azure sky and the blue waters give these images a particularly minimalistic feel which conveys the expansiveness of the sky, and focuses on the contrasting motion of the powerful flowing waves with dramatic effect.
