They pick the stories you will see and hear on the news, the order in which they are presented, and how much time each story runs. That’s a lot of power. I love producers. Not because I came through the producing ranks, but because they are the glue to the newsroom. They make sure everything fits together in a succinct and organized way. I produced newscasts in Baltimore and Chicago. I’ve hired dozens of producers during my 30 year career running newsrooms. It is one of the best jobs ever.
