Something In Common EP
Data-driven album cover
I started with a list of songs produced by the artist, and each cover was based on one of those songs. I listened to the songs at different times throughout the day to get a sense of which resonated most with me. Once I selected the most fitting track, we moved on to the visualisation process. For each album, I used a circular shape as the central motif. This was inspired by two things: the elements found in architecture (such as stained glass windows, domes, and arches) and a tribute to Vassily Kandinsky. Kandinsky was not only a great painter but also a talented musician. In his work, he used shapes, colours, and lines to show the connection between music and painting.

Trial and error
Sketch, test, repeat...
The concept was to represent one single track of the album in a visual form, mimicking the shape of the vinyl itself. After sketching out a few ideas, I started to play with scripts and tools to decode the music and extract the waveform of the song (images below). But it wasn’t easy.

Once I managed to extract the waveform in a vector format (the ‘easy’ part), I started to play on Illustrator to create the shape that better represented the song. The multitude of vector elements made the file crash an infinite amount of times while I was exploring different shapes and colours.

Out of the many great songs present in the Something In Common EP, I focused on the track Saint Is feat. Sergi Yaro – Dancing In The Rain. You can watch the animated version of the album cover on Instagram here.
