VR Tampere - Ticket Office

VR Ticket Office
Multi-functional ticket office that serves around the clock

The new tracks of ticket booking
Travel booking has largely moved online. VR, the railway company owned by the Finnish government, was undergoing a more comprehensive renewal and needed to remodel their ticket sale service point. It has two important functions: to serve as a customer service space for part of the day, while providing an enjoyable space for ticket machines to be open around the clock. The first implementation of the new concept is located in the Tampere railway station.

As the 30 m² ticket office space would serve a variety of functions, an important starting point was determining how to divide the space without compromising customer experience even when part of it was closed. A folding glass wall, seating, a lockable customer service point, and ticket machines were strategically placed to provide enough room to do business during and after office hours. Wood became a natural choice for the entire design language, which is accentuated with leather, gray tones and a calmer, darker hue of VR’s green brand colour.

Showing some character
To steer away from distant corporation vibes, we opted for an overall light and cozy atmosphere by bringing in some playfulness. Sympathetic characters, familiar from the restaurant car, are used in communication and at the service desk. Along with VR’s updated visual identity, a brighter new nuance of green was reserved for signage and communication. A map – including illustrations by Sanna Mander – inspires eco-friendly traveling, pointing out the places you can travel to by train for a staycation.

Stripes and light to make it right
Elements from railways, e.g. speed and rail tracks, appear as striped patterns on lamellas and as grooves in the benches and service counter. Particular attention was paid to technology and the roof by renewing the entire suspended ceiling and steel frames. With indirect lighting the service point was brought to life, setting just the right atmosphere to begin a pleasant journey.
